Un Cuento de Luces y Sombras (A Tale of Lights and Shadows) is an operetta in three acts, composed by Carlos Cordero with libretto by Germán Barboza, about the fight between two reigns: the reign of lights and the reign of shadows. Kira, the queen of light, is in a war against Sombras, the king of shadows, while Zara and Adrik -their heirs- fall deeply in love defying the rules set by Zola –dame of the Earth- that dictated that no one from the two worlds can meet with each other. That's the way things are supposed to be, or at least how they thought it was best.

LOLALardoFBPost.jpg

Join us at 7pm for a FREE Livestream of Part II of Lardo Weeping, the Opera! Lardo Weeping, an original opera composed by Peter Stopschinski with libretto by Terry Galloway and dramaturgy by Donna Nudd, is a provocative commentary on the human condition as seen through the eyes of Dinah Le Farge, a fat, queer, philosopher recluse, and lover of both art and garbage. With her wit and candor, she takes the audience on a journey into her past experiences and struggles. The opera culminates with Dinah literally tearing herself apart then picking up the pieces and putting them back together again.

This opera is intended for ages 18+ and is not appropriate for children.

Lardo Weeping In Concert

LOLALardoFBPost.jpg

LOLA presents the full concert premiere of the new chamber opera by composer Peter Stopschinski and playwright Terry Galloway with Mezzo Soprano Liz Cass as Dinah LeFarge.

 August 17th @7pm CDT

Studio A Concert Hall

This event is free, donations are welcome, reservations are required

Recommended for adults 18 and older

Lardo Weeping is a wonderful journey through the mind of recluse-genius Dinah LeFarge, a clever, intellectual, quite sexual woman of independent means who seldom ventures outside her apartment and refuses to answer her door unarmed. Dinah finds herself with only five dollars left to her name but claims to have "otherworldly resources" and hints at a miraculous transformation for her and her audience. Dinah takes us through her many ideas and schemes and through this storytelling we are introduced to many feminist icons including Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Emma Goldman, Ann Landers, and others. We are treated to stories about her past employment as a convenience store clerk, her food journaling, and Dinah’s ongoing obsession with the “Weekly World News”. This journey ends with Dinah literally tearing her body apart and putting it back together again further highlighting the stress and demands put on human and especially female bodies.

Dido and Aeneas

St. Martin's Lutheran Church
Austin, TX

LOLA and Panoramic Voices present a new staging of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

dido-aeneas.jpg

Love, Sorcery, and tragic opera, what better way to spend Valentine’s Day Weekend!  LOLA (Local Opera Local Artists) and Panoramic Voices (both Austin Critics Table Award Winners) present Henry Purcell’s stunningly beautiful baroque masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas (late 17th century). This first collaboration from two Austin art institutions fuses brilliant operatic talent, chamber orchestra, chorus, and choreography to depict the timeless tale of Dido, Queen of Carthage, caught between her duty to marry the Trojan Prince Aeneas, solidifying the political power of Carthage, and the desires of her heart, further complicated by an opposing and powerful sorceress. Music Direction by Brent Baldwin, Stage Direction by Rebecca Herman, and Choreography by Erica Gionfriddo.

This cast includes Ivy Cantu making her LOLA and Panoramic Voices debut as Queen Dido and the powerful well-established baritone David Small in the role of Aeneas. Two sopranos will be making their debuts: Jihee Han making her LOLA and Panoramic Voices debut as Belinda, Dido’s confidant and Natalie Howard making her LOLA debut as the Sorceress with a vendetta. Rounding out the cast are mezzo Julie Silva as  Second Woman, soprano Mary Kettlewell as First Witch, mezzo Jessica Blau as Second Witch, tenor Jeffrey Jones Ragona as The Sailor, and countertenor Holt Skinner as The Spirit.

In addition to Purcell’s work, a premier of Forgiveness by Austin-based choral composer Carlos Alberto Cordero Garcia, featuring soprano Katrina Saporsantos will be performed prior to the opera. This piece is a commission by Panoramic Voices.

Running time for Dido and Aeneas – Approximately 60 minutes
